Terms
These are the rules for Chess Knight, in plain words. When you make an account, you agree to them.
Last updated: 12 October 2026.
Who can use it
Chess Knight is for players of every age. Children play here too. To make an account, you must be 13 or older, or have permission from a parent or guardian.
Your account
- Your account is for you only. Do not tell anyone your password, and do not use it on other sites.
- You are responsible for what is done with your account. Sign out on shared devices.
- If you think someone else can get into your account, choose a new password. Use “Forgot your password?” on the sign-in page. This signs you out on all other devices. Then tell us.
Fair play
A game against a person is only fun when both players play on their own. Before your first one, you agree to play fair.
- During a game against a person, get no help from a chess engine or from another person. Do not use any app or website that looks at positions. Do not use books, notes, videos or lists of moves. Do not use a second screen or device.
- The coach waits too. Until a game against a person ends, the coach does not look at its positions. This is also true for a game with no clock.
- After the game, review it in any way you like.
How we find cheating. Players can report a game (see Reporting someone). We also look for games that are much more accurate than the player’s usual games. We compare them with the player’s other reviewed games. A flag only means that a person looks at the game. Nothing happens until a person checks it.
What can happen: a warning, or a ban from games against people. The rest of Chess Knight continues to work. If we ban a player for cheating, we give back the rating points that other players lost to them in rated games. Do not make a new account to avoid a ban. That also breaks these rules.
Names and behavior
- Everyone can see your username, so it must be OK for players of every age. It must not be sexual, hateful or rude, or be about drugs or violence. Do not pretend to be Chess Knight or another person. Before we save a name, a model on our own computer checks it automatically.
- Your first name is private: only you and the coach see it.
- Be kind. Do not bully or mock other players. Do not spam challenges or friend requests.
- Games against people have no typed chat, only emotes. Use them kindly. If a player’s emotes upset you, mute them from ⋯ in the game.
Strikes. You get a strike for a username that is clearly sexual or hateful, or for an upload that is clearly sexual. A person can also give a strike after a report. At three strikes, we suspend the account. Then you can sign in only to see your strikes and to appeal, and that email cannot make a new account. Your account’s standing page shows your strikes and how to appeal. A person reads every appeal.
Reporting someone
Open ⋯ in the game, or tap the player’s name, and choose Report. Pick a reason, and add a short note if you like. The reasons are cheating, rude or mean behavior in a game, bullying or spam, and pretending to be someone else. You can also report a rude username, something rude in a Studio item, or something else. You can report Studio items in the same way. Please report only what really happened.
- We never tell players who reported them.
- We keep a copy of what happened with the report, so it cannot change later. The copy has the game’s moves and emotes, the name at that time, the Studio item, and the challenges and friend requests between you.
- A person reads every report and decides what to do. They can do nothing or give a warning. They can make the player choose a new username, remove a Studio item, or switch off the player’s emotes for a time. They can also give a strike, ban the player from games against people, or suspend the account. We may tell you that we took action, but not what it was.
- One thing happens automatically. If three different players report the same username or Studio item within two weeks, we hide it until a person looks at it.
- After you report a player, you can block them. Then they cannot challenge you or ask to be friends.
Your games and data
- You can import your games from chess.com and Lichess with your username there. We get them from their public game lists. You can also paste PGN. After you save a username, new games come in about every 10 minutes. Use only your own usernames, because the coach treats those games as yours.
- Your games, their reviews and your lessons are yours, and private to your account. We use them to coach you. We also use them to know how you usually play, for Fair play. We never sell or share them.
- A game against a person here is in the games of both players.
- What we keep and why: Privacy.
What you upload
In the Studio, you can make or upload your own pieces, boards, squares, emotes, sounds and finisher videos. You can add screenshots to Report a problem.
- Upload only what you made or have permission to use. Keep it OK for players of every age.
- Before we keep a picture, sound or video, our own computer checks it automatically. We refuse anything sexual, and we never keep refused files (see Strikes). Players can report anything else that is rude.
- Only you see what you keep private. When you publish to the Studio’s library, everyone who is signed in can see it and use it on Chess Knight. It is still yours.
- Only the people who run the site see screenshots sent with Report a problem.
- We can remove anything that breaks these rules.
Paying for a plan
You can use Chess Knight for free. You can also pay for a plan: Monthly, $3 a month, or Yearly, $30 a year. Prices are in US dollars. Sales tax or VAT may be added.
- Who takes the payment. Stripe takes it for us. You type your card into Stripe’s secure fields, and Stripe’s terms also apply to the payment.
- Renewal. Your plan renews by itself at the end of each month or year, and Stripe charges the same card. If the price changes, we tell you before the new price applies to you.
- Cancel anytime. In the app, open Settings, then Manage subscription. Your plan stays on until the end of the time you paid for. Then it stops, and we do not charge you again.
- Refunds. We do not refund part of a month or a year. When you cancel, you keep your plan until the end of the time you paid for. If a charge is wrong (for example, you paid twice), use Report a problem, and we will correct it.
- A payment that fails. Stripe tries again for a few days. If it still fails, your plan stops.
- Deleting your account cancels your plan at once, with no refund for the time left.
No guarantees
- Lessons, reviews and engine lines are advice to help you improve. They are not a promise of results. Stockfish and the coach can be wrong. A review can change when the coach improves.
- One person runs Chess Knight on one computer, and it comes as it is, with a paid plan or without one. We do our best, but we cannot promise that it is always up, fast or free of mistakes. Sometimes it is down for an update or a fix. Features can change or stop.
- As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for any loss that comes from your use of Chess Knight.
Ending your account
- You can leave at any time. Go to Settings → Delete account and enter your password. We delete your account, games, reviews, lessons and Studio items at once. You cannot undo this. Our weekly backup copy is on the same computer, and we replace it within two weeks.
- Some things stay. A game you played against a person stays in their games. We keep reports, strikes and appeals about the account.
- If an account breaks these terms, we can suspend it, or ban it from games against people. You can appeal on your standing page.
Changes to these terms
When these terms change, we change this page and its date. If a change is important, we tell players before it starts. If you use Chess Knight after a change, you accept it.
